Action Plans for Initiatives to Support SDG 12 Targets

Current Country Status and Key Initiatives to Support SDG 12 Targets

SDG 12 - "Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns"

Status Overview

Globally, sustainability efforts are advancing, with increasing policies supporting sustainable consumption and production. Environmental agreement compliance remains strong. However, challenges persist, including low sustainable e-waste management and high fossil fuel subsidies. Corporate sustainability reporting has expanded dramatically, with most large companies now disclosing environmental performance through standardized mechanisms. These trends highlight progress while underscoring the need for continued focus on waste management, energy conservation, and emissions reduction. The UN is advancing SDG 12 through initiatives like the 10- Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, which helps countries implement sustainable consumption policies and improve waste management.

Proposed Initiatives for SDG 12 Targets

To support accelerated progress toward SDG 12, this section presents a set of evidence‑based initiatives, followed by tailored recommendations presented by country context, i.e., countries classified by the World Bank as low‑income, middle‑income, high‑income, and fragile/conflict‑affected states (FCAS). These key recommendations recognise that countries face different constraints and opportunities, and therefore require differentiated policy and financing approaches.
