Sustainability is the philosophy and practice of meeting our current needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. According to the report of the UN Secretary‑General to the General Assembly (Eightieth session) and the Economic and Social Council (2025 session), out of 137 SDG targets with trend data and additional inputs from custodian agencies, 35 percent demonstrate on‑track or moderate progress. By contrast, 47 percent show only marginal progress or no progress, and 18 percent have regressed below their 2015 baseline levels. The latest global SDG assessment confirms this uneven trajectory, showing that progress remains far too slow to meet the 2030 deadline. Only a small share of targets are advancing as planned, while many others are moving forward only marginally or have stalled entirely. Most concerning is the growing proportion of targets that have slipped backwards since 2015. Together, these figures highlight the scale of the implementation gap and the urgent need for stronger national action, sustained financing, and more effective international cooperation.

Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals beyond 2030 will require a transformative yet practical strategy that accounts for the complexities of the global energy landscape, still largely reliant on fossil fuels. While the existing SDGs have driven significant progress, their broad targets must be refined into more actionable and context-specific milestones to address evolving challenges, technological advancements, and regional differences. This gradual approach simplifies ambitious goals, ensures feasibility within realistic timeframes, and helps maintain clarity and focus among policymakers and stakeholders.
The lofty goals of the green agenda have sometimes faced criticism for being overly ambitious, particularly in regions where dependency on coal, oil, and gas is deeply entrenched. Developing nations often grapple with the dual challenge of pursuing economic growth while adhering to stringent emissions reduction commitments. For many, transitioning to renewables is constrained by financial limitations, inadequate infrastructure, and the high initial costs of cleaner energy solutions. Moreover, the global energy market is shaped by complex geopolitical dynamics, with fossil-fuel-rich nations wielding significant influence. The availability of proven and unproven reserves further complicates transition timelines, as countries prioritise energy security over immediate decarbonisation. These factors underscore the inherent tension between the aspirations of international climate agreements and the realities of energy consumption patterns worldwide.
A realistic and feasible energy transition strategy is essential for achieving sustainable development, to ensure a balanced shift toward cleaner energy while maintaining economic stability and social well-being. Without a well-planned approach, rapid energy shifts can disrupt industries, increase costs, and hinder accessibility, particularly for vulnerable populations. A pragmatic strategy will help to integrate renewable energy sources efficiently, while also improving infrastructure, fostering innovation, and creating new job opportunities. Additionally, the strategy is required to ensure the most difficult of balancing acts i.e., to support climate goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions without compromising energy security or economic growth.
